The seasons of the Christian Year

Each season carries its own theme and emotion, from expectation of Christ's birth to communion in his suffering, death and resurrection, and on to new life in the Spirit. On the calendar, each season runs as a colour band alongside the weeks.

Advent

Expectation: the church awaits the coming of the Lord.

Christmas

Incarnation: the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

Epiphany

Revelation: Christ is made known to the nations.

Lent

Repentance: forty days of examination and return.

Holy Week

Passion: the road to the cross.

Easter

Resurrection: fifty days of paschal joy.

Pentecost

Spirit: the church is sent out in power.

Ordinary Time

Growth: the long walk of the people of God.

Why a Christian Year calendar?

The eternal God chose to do his work inside the time he created. As temporal creatures, we give value to the past through remembrance and project our hope into the future through expectation, and in Scripture, remembering and anticipating are fundamental acts. The Christian Year orders time around the decisive moments of the life of Jesus: incarnation, life, passion, resurrection and ascension. Inhabiting time this way is not merely keeping the church's rhythm; it sets an annual cycle of memory and expectation, centred on Christ, against the ticking of the consumer calendar.

“As Christians walked through the church year, the natural world around them illuminated the story of Jesus. They walked through the seasons of nature and the calendar of the church as fellow pilgrims.”

Quick questions

Which size should I pick?
P (A3) for a desk or office wall. M (A2) for the kitchen. G (A1) for a living-room wall. GG (A0) is the big planner format, for a large wall, a church or a team room.
Can I print it at home?
P (A3) yes, if your printer takes A3. The rest need a print shop. Don't shrink the file to A4, the type becomes too small.
Where do the holidays come from?
Brazilian national holidays, plus Paraná (state emancipation, 19 December) and Curitiba (patron saint, 8 September). Movable Christian dates are computed from each year's Easter.
